In a recent budget proposal made House Republicans announced plans to zero out all funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the nonprofit responsible for funding public media including NPR, PBS, Pacifica and more. If the Republicans are successful, it would be a tremendous blow to the entire public interest media sector. We cannot allow Republicans to destroy public media.
What is at risk are stories like the following. As organization such as right-wing Moral Majority which come to find out were neither the majority nor moral on any standard of proof the floodgates have opened with stories of Christian and evangelical, and Catholic ‘men of the cloth’ getting caught in unrestrained sexual activities with those of questionable ages. Their stories continue to flood the airways as their message continues as the same old superiority-laden Caucasian right-wing verbal vomit of what it means to be an American.
The current move to purchase as many programming facilities and production houses, and to deny Americans a more pluralistic truthful and enriching broadcasting by denying funding for public broadcasting is absolute madness and goes against every wish of our forefathers purpose of writing the Bill of Rights. Not withstanding are the right wing’s constant attacks in all areas of human, civil, and more importantly the Bill of Rights in the first place. With recent attacks on Net neutrality and other First Amendment rights there should be enough evidence that they intend on attempting on returning the United States to a third world monarchy-based plutocracy wherein the only rights being granted are those by old, rich, white men to other old, rich, white men.
As an American not only am I embarrassed as to the actions of public servants such as Representative Lamborn (R-CO), I am incensed that H.R. 68, the Resolution to amend the Communications Act of 1934 to prohibit Federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting after fiscal year 2013 (FY2013) is on the books in the first place. This law, if it goes into effect is an evil and hateful doctrine that has no place in a public discussion. A reasoned person would think especially at a time in our fiscal recovery that we would need more answers to current problems such as alternative and sustainable choices in lieu of enacting policies that would turn off heating system’s for the elderly, the infirmed and the impoverished and endangering their lives by reducing their food allotments.
This is NOT the America I was born in. I am deeply saddened and hurt that our leaders would step so low in human respect as to even consider such legislation. Already we have witnessed our own historic million man march onto the steps of Washington, DC and in light of our present world history of am Arab spring unfolding before our very eyes on the world stage as whole countries begin to finally stand up for their “Unalienable” rights and say NO MORE to their representatives and leaders. They do not to even consider for a moment that they will not succeed. As “the sleeping giant” that is now awaking deep in the heart of Americans they shall know us by our diversity and unimaginable size of our shadow that we will present on the steps of Congress yet again. Washington, please do not go down that road, and continue to do what is right in restoring funding for public broadcasting.
